Turkey has blocked access to Instagram after the platform blocked condolence posts for the slain Hamas leader. The regulator did not specify the reason and duration of the ban, but it happened after an official criticized Instagram's actions.

Access to the social media platform Instagram has been blocked in Turkey, the information technology regulator said on Friday. This happened after the platform blocked posts of condolences in connection with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Reuters reports UNN.

The information technology regulator did not specify the reason for blocking Instagram and the duration of the ban.

Reportedly, the platform's mobile application has also become unavailable.

Reuters writes that the Instagram blocking followed comments on Wednesday by Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun. He criticized the platform for its decision to block messages of condolence over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key official of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“It's censorship, pure and simple,” Altun, the Turkish president's communications director, told X, adding that Instagram did not cite any policy violations in its actions.

The Turkish Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) published the decision of August 2 on its website.
