The information technology regulator did not specify the reason for blocking Instagram and the duration of the ban.
Reportedly, the platform's mobile application has also become unavailable.
Reuters writes that the Instagram blocking followed comments on Wednesday by Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun. He criticized the platform for its decision to block messages of condolence over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key official of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
“It's censorship, pure and simple,” Altun, the Turkish president's communications director, told X, adding that Instagram did not cite any policy violations in its actions.
The Turkish Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) published the decision of August 2 on its website.
