The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War dismantled the names of cities and the image of the Soviet Gold Star medal on the Alley of Hero Cities in the capital. In particular, the names of the cities of Moscow and Minsk were dismantled. This was reported by the press service of the National Museum of History of Ukraine in World War II, UNN reports.
Details
“Today, the War Museum has taken an extremely important and symbolic step - dismantling the letters that spell out the names of the cities and the image of the Soviet Gold Star medal on the Alley of Hero Cities. The museum initiated a survey of the bronze reliefs. Specialists of the National Research and Restoration Center of Ukraine conducted a study, on the basis of which they created a “Passport of Examination of the State of Preservation of Bronze Overlay Elements of the Gold Star Medals and Text Inscriptions.” They also substantiated the need for their dismantling and restoration,” the statement said.
The footage shows that the names in question are, in particular, the names of cities such as Moscow, Minsk, and probably Novorossiysk.
The museum recalled that the term “Hero City” was established in the USSR after the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 8, 1965, “On Approval of the Regulation on the Highest Degree of Distinction - the Title of Hero City,” and the first cities to receive this title were Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Odesa, Sevastopol, Volgograd, Kyiv, and Moscow.
“It is worth noting that no criteria were defined for the work of the commissions that made the decision to award the title of 'Hero City'. The designations of cities were chaotic and used purely for ideological purposes - the implementation of the myth of the Great Patriotic War,” the museum emphasized.

The Head of the UINP supported the NBU's initiative to rename kopiykas to shkas. This will contribute to the de-Russification and revival of national traditions in the money circulation of Ukraine.
