According to the EU Commission's preliminary assessment, platform X violated rules regarding access to data for researchers, transparency in advertising and dark patterns. At the same time, similar investigations are underway against other major online platforms. Writes UNN with reference to Business Insider.

The European Commission said on Friday that Ilon Musk's X is deceiving its users and violating online content rules.

According to a preliminary opinion, the platform violated rules regarding access to data for researchers, ad transparency and "dark patterns.

It's also revealed that the blue X checkmark system for "verified accounts" deceives users, as anyone can pay to get verified status.

The EU Commission publishes for the first time the results of a preliminary investigation under the new EU Digital Services Act (DSA, Digital Services Act).

At X, the blue-and-white checkmarks that should signify verification were assigned to celebrities, politicians and public figures following the company's vetting process prior to Musk's takeover. This is a common practice for other online services as well. Musk, on the other hand, introduced checkmarks for all subscribers that look the same as before. There were many problems immediately after the switch, as fake accounts posing as companies or celebrities suddenly looked real, Spiegel notes.

Now X has the right to defend itself, but if our viewpoint is confirmed, we will impose fines and demand significant changes

- wrote industry commissioner Thierry Breton on the X website.

It is important to recall that in relation to DSA, online platforms have to adhere to much stricter rules. For example, there should be more transparency in advertising - researchers should be given access to certain data.

It is also known as of today that DSA-based investigations are underway into other major online platforms.
