Sweden records first case of monkeypox outside Africa

The first case of Clade I monkeypox outside of Africa has been detected in Sweden. The person became infected while staying in the African region where the disease is outbreak.
A case of monkeypox was reported in Sweden. This is the first time the disease has been detected outside the African continent. This was stated by the Swedish Ministry of Health, UNN reports .

Today we have received confirmation that the first case of a more severe type of smallpox, called Clade I, has been reported in Sweden
Olivia Wigzell, Director General of the Swedish Public Health Agency, clarified that the person was infected while staying in a region of Africa that is currently experiencing a large outbreak of smallpox. She added that the person who was infected received help and instructions in accordance with the recommendations of the health agency.

This case does not require any further infection control measures per se, but we are taking the outbreak of mpox clade I very seriously. We are closely monitoring it and are constantly evaluating whether new measures are needed
