The government is focusing on repair work, attracting international assistance, decentralizing generation, and strengthening air defense to ensure energy security and minimize risks to the energy sector amid Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal highlighted the main vectors of energy security activities, including repairs and assistance from partners, decentralization of generation and strengthening of air defense. Shmyhal said this during a government meeting, UNN reports.

"Another important challenge today is energy security. The enemy has carried out a series of intense attacks on energy facilities. First of all, we are talking about thermal generation.

Our task is to minimize risks to the energy sector by next winter. We need to make sure that Ukrainians have light and heat in their homes and that their businesses operate smoothly," Shmyhal said.

The Prime Minister identified three main vectors of activity.

"The first is the actual repairs and attracting assistance from partners. We have high hopes for the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine, to which our international partners have contributed more than EUR 405 million," Shmyhal added.

He also noted that funds are being prioritized for the purchase of equipment for those regions where the situation is most difficult. In particular, for Kharkiv and Kharkiv region.

"The second area is the decentralization of our generation. Instead of large power plants that are vulnerable to attacks, we need dozens of small, dispersed facilities. We are deploying a network of cogeneration units that will support the critical infrastructure of communities. We will increase the intensity of work in this area," the Prime Minister added.

Shmyhal emphasized the third area of focus is strengthening air defense.

Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyi believes that the only way to protect Ukraine's energy system from Russian attacks is to decentralize generating capacity by building many small power plants.
