Wife of Putin's spokesman Peskov files lawsuit to lift EU sanctions

Tetyana Navka, the wife of Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, has filed a lawsuit aimed at overturning the European Union sanctions imposed on her due to the war in Ukraine, according to details published on the EU website, UNN reports citing Reuters.

Navka, a former Olympic champion in figure skating, was added to the EU sanctions list in June 2022, targeting individuals for Moscow's actions in Ukraine. Peskov's daughter Elizaveta and son Nikolai were included in the same list.

At the time, Brussels stated that the sanctions, which included a ban on entry to the EU and financial restrictions, were imposed "in respect of actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."

Details published on the EU website EUR-Lex indicate that the 51-year-old Navka, who was born in Soviet Ukraine but is a citizen of Russia, is now seeking to have the sanctions against her lifted through the EU Court.

The statement says she claims that the reason for the restrictions against her was not properly stated, that errors were made in law and in the assessment of factual data, and that the EU failed to prove a sufficient link between her and the stated purpose of its sanctions.

Navka is demanding from the Council of the European Union compensation for material damage, damage to her reputation, and other non-material damage totaling just over 2 million euros ($2.3 million), as stated in the same document.

Another official EU database shows that Katerina Ignatova, the wife of Sergei Chemezov, head of the state defense-industrial corporation Rostec, is trying to overturn EU sanctions against her through the same legal route.
