SpaceX's first artificial intelligence satellites, which will operate on Nvidia chips, are planned for launch in the fourth quarter of 2027. SpaceX founder Elon Musk said this on August 24, Bloomberg reported, writes UNN.

According to Musk, the orbital data centers are expected to reach a "significant scale" as early as 2028. He also said that a satellite data center would be significantly simpler, cheaper, denser, and lighter than a traditional server rack.
The concept involves deploying computing capacity directly in orbit. SpaceX plans to use satellites to perform complex artificial intelligence computations.

In January, SpaceX filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to deploy a network of up to 1 million satellites designed to perform artificial intelligence computations. The company views orbital data centers as an alternative to ground-based infrastructure.
SpaceX chose Nvidia technologies
Earlier this month, SpaceX said it would use Nvidia technologies for the artificial intelligence infrastructure it plans to deploy in space. Initially, the company considered various satellite designs using chips from different manufacturers, but ultimately settled on Nvidia solutions.
Nvidia also said that SpaceX would use its Vera central processing unit to accelerate the computations required to operate Grok and the next generation of artificial intelligence agents.
SpaceX previously said that the first orbital data centers could be launched in 2028. Musk later moved the expected launch timeline to 2027.
