Merz on creating a contact group in Europe on Ukraine: we must first of all work out our political positions
Kyiv • UNN
German CDU leader Friedrich Merz supported the creation of a European Contact Group on Ukraine with the participation of Britain. The group should develop common positions for dialogue with the United States if Trump wins.
Leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), candidate for Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that it is very important to form a contact group on Ukraine in Europe. The group must first of all work out political positions, how to talk to the United States when Donald Trump will be president from January. He said this to journalists following a meeting with Vladimir Zelensky, reports UNN.
I accept President Zelensky's proposal with great interest that Denmark can play a tangible role. It is very important that we now form such a contact group in Europe and not only on the basis of the EU. Britain should also be present, because it is a very important strategic partner in NATO
Merz noted that it is important that this contact group is formed as soon as possible.
"This contact group should work out first of all our political positions, how to talk to the United States when Trump will be president from January. These are issues that need to be discussed, but it seems to me that now this is the most important issue for us to form such a contact group as soon as possible and for it to work," Merz said.
