"On Tuesday, MEPs re-elected Roberta Mecola (EPP, Malta) as president of the European Parliament until 2027, she received 562 votes in the first round," the statement said.
Roberta Mecola, as indicated, won the election in the first round, where she received an absolute majority of 562 votes out of 699 cast by secret ballot among two candidates. She will continue to lead the European Parliament for the first two and a half years.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal congratulated Metzola on his re-election on the social network X.
"Congratulations to Roberta Mecola on her re-election as President of the European Parliament. [I highly appreciate President Metsola's personal commitment to supporting Ukraine, as well as her unwavering dedication to protecting people and defending our European way of life. I look forward to continuing our close cooperation to restore a just peace as soon as possible," Zelenskyy wrote.
