On Saturday morning, authorities ordered the evacuation of the town of Summerland in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley as the Bald Range fire approached the settlement. The fire, first reported on Friday afternoon, could not be quickly contained. According to the latest estimates, it has already covered more than 5,000 hectares (12,355 acres).
Last month, a fire in Canada's eastern province of Ontario caused smoke that darkened the skies and worsened air quality even in Washington, D.C. The Bald Range fire in British Columbia also started amid hot and dry summer weather, while strong winds contributed to its rapid spread.
The Okanagan Valley is located approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) inland from Vancouver and nearly 500 kilometers northeast of Seattle. Thanks to its warm and sunny climate, a wide range of wines is produced here.
Firefighters, helicopters, and firefighting aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze, local authorities said.
