German Foreign Ministry talks with China's special envoy for Ukraine on peace conference

German and Chinese officials discussed a potential peace conference in Switzerland on Russia's war against Ukraine, but China did not present any new initiatives.
State Secretary of the German Foreign Ministry Thomas Begger held talks in Berlin on Saturday with China's Special Representative for Ukraine Li Hui, tagesschau reports, UNN writes.
"There was, in particular, a discussion about a possible peace conference in Switzerland," the German Foreign Ministry spokesman said. However, during the constructive conversation, the well-known differences between the positions of China and the EU on Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine became clear, he added. China also did not present any new initiatives.
"We have reiterated that China's position on this key issue affects relations between Germany and China, as well as the EU and China," the German Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized. He noted that the federal government has made it clear how important it is to combat sanctions evasion by Chinese companies and so-called dual-use goods that Russia could use in a war against Ukraine.
