In the Poltava region, a former police sergeant was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing a fatal traffic accident while intoxicated. Driving at a speed of over 100 km/h, he struck two underage sisters on the roadside. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, according to UNN.

The former police officer was found guilty of a fatal traffic accident in Karlivka, which resulted in the deaths of two 17-year-old sisters. The court sentenced him to the maximum penalty—12 years of imprisonment. He was also deprived of the right to drive vehicles for 10 years and stripped of his special rank,

the statement reads.

The public prosecution in court was led by the head of the Poltava Regional Prosecutor's Office, Yevhen Gladiy.

Prosecutors proved that on the evening of November 30, 2025, the police sergeant, driving his own Hyundai Tucson, struck two 17-year-old sisters who were walking along the roadside toward their home. The girls died at the scene from their injuries. They were triplet sisters.

At the time of the accident, the driver was in a state of alcohol intoxication—1.7 ppm of alcohol was detected in his blood. Furthermore, he was traveling at a speed of over 100 km/h within a populated area.

Following the accident, the law enforcement officer was notified of the charges and taken into custody without the right to bail. Based on the results of an internal investigation, he was dismissed from the police force.

In court, the man pleaded guilty and apologized to the mother of the deceased girls.

Today, the Karlivka District Court delivered a verdict against the former law enforcement officer for the traffic accident that claimed the lives of two children. Driving under the influence and excessive speed led to these fatal consequences. My position in court as the public prosecutor was non-negotiable—the maximum penalty provided by the sanction of the relevant article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,

noted the head of the Poltava Regional Prosecutor's Office, Yevhen Gladiy.
