Details
The incident occurred this past weekend in the evening in the city of Podilsk. Passersby who heard the explosion reported it to the special line 102.
Currently, the investigation has established that a 51-year-old serviceman, who was in AWOL status, while intoxicated near one of the local lyceums, began to speak contemptuously towards teenagers who were near the educational institution at the time. The man provoked a quarrel, used obscene language, displayed an object resembling a grenade, and brazenly threatened to use it.
Despite the remarks of passersby, the man did not stop his illegal actions. He later threw the explosive device towards the area where the teenagers were. As a result of the explosion, a 13-year-old boy sustained bodily injuries. He received medical assistance on the spot. Hospitalization was not required. The final nature and severity of the bodily injuries will be determined by a forensic medical examination ordered by the police.
Investigators conducted an inspection of the scene and seized the remains of the explosive device, preliminarily identified as a hand fragmentation grenade, which were sent for expert examination.
Law enforcement officers tracked down the perpetrator on the same evening not far from the scene. A sobriety test showed that he was intoxicated.
The investigators detained the suspect in a procedural manner and, upon sufficient evidence, notified him of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This concerns hooliganism, i.e., a gross violation of public order based on clear disrespect for society, accompanied by particular audacity and committed using an object specially adapted for causing bodily harm.
The court granted the law enforcement's motion and imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of detention without the possibility of bail.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Podilsk District Prosecutor's Office.
The police also added that the proceedings under Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized abandonment of a military unit or place of service) against the suspect are currently pending in court.
