Former President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump (2017-2021) and his advisers are trying to organize a tough campaign against Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
In recent days, Republicans have criticized the vice president for everything from her handling of immigration issues and her past as a prosecutor to her “horrible” and “despicable” behavior. On Wednesday, Donald Trump called Harris a “radical, left-wing lunatic,” and the next day he called her “unfit” in an interview with Fox News.
Trump's campaign released a campaign ad accusing Harris of “covering up Biden's obvious mental decline” with images of him stumbling and of doing his job for him, blaming her for the “invasion” of immigrants, rising inflation, and the “death of the American dream.
“They are literally grasping at straws. The Republicans were desperate to run against Joe Biden. ... Harris's emergence in the race, I think, has turned their attacks and strategies upside down,” said Michael Broadcourt, former vice chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party.
Rep. Tim Burchett (Republican from Tennessee) and Harriet Hageman (Republican from Wyoming) called Harris a “mercenary” in an interview.
It should be noted that on Tuesday, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives warned caucus members in a closed-door meeting to focus on Harris's record, not her racial background. The call came after Trump triggered a fake-birth conspiracy over Harris's eligibility to run in 2020.
Other Republicans, while avoiding issues of race and gender, focused on defining Harris as an ultra-progressive politician from San Francisco who is “soft” on crime and other issues.
In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton repeatedly referred to Harris as a “San Francisco liberal,” criticizing Harris for her approach to crime, accusing her of opposing the death penalty, supporting rioters, and releasing criminals from prison when she was California's attorney general.
Meanwhile, the Biden-Harris campaign sent out text messages to its supporters announcing that Harris was running for president. The vice president updated her donation page, which now reads “donate to elect Kamala Harris” and “your contribution will benefit Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris announced her readiness for a debate with Trump on September 10. The Trump campaign refuses to coordinate plans until Harris officially becomes the Democratic nominee at the convention in August.
