NORAD intercepted two Russian Tu-95s and two Chinese H-6s off the coast of Alaska. This is the first time that Russian and Chinese bombers have patrolled together in this region.

On the eve of US President Joe Biden's address to the nation, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported  that it had sent fighter jets to intercept two Russian Tu-95 bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers off the coast of Alaska. UNN reports this with reference to Fox News.

Details

In a press release, the agency confirmed that on July 24, it detected, tracked and intercepted two Russian Tu-95s and two Chinese H-6s operating in the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in Alaska.

The interception was carried out by NORAD fighters from the United States and Canada.

According to Fox News, this is the first time that Russian and Chinese bombers have patrolled together off the coast of Alaska.

The news of the Russian and Chinese planes came less than an hour before Biden was to address the nation in his first public appearance since announcing he would not run for a second term.

"The Russian and Chinese aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace. Russia's and China's activity in the Alaskan ADIZ is not considered a threat, and NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and respond with presence," the agency said in a statement.

It has not yet been established whether this is related to Biden's appeal.
