The Russian army most likely captured approximately 500-550 sq. km of Ukrainian territory in July 2025, which is similar to June. At the same time, constant losses and Ukrainian counterattacks likely thwarted Russia's plans to create a buffer zone in the Sumy region. This is stated in a new report by the UK Ministry of Defense based on intelligence data, reports UNN.
Details
"Russian ground forces most likely captured approximately 500-550 sq. km of Ukrainian territory in July 2025. The troops captured a similar area of Ukrainian territory in June 2025, after a monthly increase since March 2025. Russian troops continued tactical advances in the Donetsk region, mainly northeast and southwest of Pokrovsk. The troops continue attempts to encircle the city and put pressure on the remaining logistical routes to the city. Russian troops now occupy almost all of the Donetsk region south of Pokrovsk," the report says.
It is noted that over the past two weeks, Russian troops have not made any noticeable progress in Ukraine's Sumy region, which borders Russia's Kursk and Belgorod regions.
"Constant losses and Ukrainian counterattacks have likely thwarted Russia's plans to create a buffer zone in the Sumy region. According to reports, units of Russia's 51st Airborne Regiment in Sumy region are refusing to carry out orders, and previous reports indicate complaints against commanders who order high-casualty infantry attacks. There are limited signs of further reinforcement of the Russian armed forces. It is highly likely that Ukrainian forces continue to conduct limited operations in the border region of Russia's Kursk region," the intelligence added.
Recall
During August 8, 163 combat engagements were recorded on the Russian-Ukrainian front. In the Pokrovsk direction, the Defense Forces of Ukraine stopped 45 aggressor attacks.
