The first compensation payments to victims of rape committed by russian soldiers during the invasion of Ukraine will be made over the next few weeks, the article says. The outlet quotes First Lady Olena Zelenska as saying that up to 500 Ukrainians who suffered sexual violence during the war will receive interim compensation this year, including financial, medical and psychological support.

It is also noted that compensation for victims of gross human rights violations, including victims of sexual violence during the war, is not only economic support, but also the restoration of justice.

According to the Global Fund for Survivors of Sexual Violence, which administers the project with Ukraine with funds from donor governments, this will be the first time that victims of violence will be awarded compensation during ongoing hostilities.

According to Esther Dingemans, director of the foundation, the reparations scheme offers confirmation and official recognition of what happened to the victims.

At the same time, the total number of Ukrainians who have suffered sexual violence by Russian forces remains unknown, as most victims do not report crimes. According to the Global Fund for Victims, it is estimated to be in the thousands.
