U.S. officials said the U.S. military operation would provide hundreds of additional truckloads of aid each day, and that these deliveries could include more than two million meals daily.

This construction is part of an effort to stop the famine in the Palestinian enclave. In the five months of Israel's military campaign against Hamas,  the Gaza Strip has been devastated, and 2.3 million people there are on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.

In their statement today, the Israeli military said they would provide security and logistical support for the pier.

In March, President Joe Biden announced that the military would build a temporary port on the Mediterranean coast of Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid by sea.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned that Gaza is facing famine. They complain of "major obstacles" in delivering aid and distributing it across the enclave.

Volunteer aid organizations and the Biden administration have been pleading with Israel to facilitate access for aid deliveries to Gaza and ensure the safe passage of their convoys into the territory.
