US approves $5 billion sale of Patriot missiles to Germany
Kyiv • UNN
The US State Department has approved a potential $5 billion sale of 600 Patriot anti-aircraft missiles to Germany. This will help Germany strengthen its air defense in line with new NATO plans.
The US State Department has approved the possible sale of up to 600 Patriot anti-aircraft missiles to NATO ally Germany for $5 billion, the Pentagon said on Thursday. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.
“The proposed sale will improve Germany's ability to counter current and future threats and enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces,” the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.
Under NATO's new defense plans, Germany will have to quadruple its air defense to protect its infrastructure and armed forces in the event of serious tensions or war, a security source told Reuters last month.
According to Reuters, Germany had 36 Patriot air defense systems during the Cold War. Today, German troops have only nine systems, after the government in Berlin sent three systems to Ukraine.
