In 2025, almost 5 billion cubic meters of water were withdrawn from natural sources in Ukraine, with housing and communal services and the energy sector becoming the largest consumers. This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine in a report on the water resources situation, according to UNN.

Details

The largest volumes of water withdrawal were recorded in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv regions.

The ministry noted that nearly 3 billion cubic meters of wastewater were discharged into surface waters during the year. More than half of this was standard-compliant clean water, one-third was standard-compliant treated water, and another 223 million cubic meters consisted of polluted wastewater.

The highest load from polluted discharges was observed in Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Kirovohrad regions, as well as in Kyiv.

The ministry identified water supply and sewerage enterprises as the primary source of pollution.

The report separately emphasizes that Ukraine uses water significantly less efficiently than European Union countries.

Ukraine consumes approximately twice as much water to generate a unit of GDP compared to the EU. This creates additional pressure on water resources and worsens the ecological state of rivers,

- the Ministry of Economy noted.
