The compensation proposed by US President Donald Trump in the amount of 20% of the value of cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz could amount to about $30 million for one fully loaded oil supertanker. This is reported by Bloomberg, writes UNN.

The calculation is based on the current oil price of about $80 per barrel. A supertanker can carry approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil, so the proposed fee could reach tens of millions of dollars per voyage. For comparison, according to Bloomberg sources, Iran previously charged up to $2 million per passage through the strait on a case-by-case basis.
Earlier, Trump announced the reinstatement of the naval blockade of Iran and emphasized that the US would become the "guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz, and therefore would receive a 20% compensation for all cargo passing through this route. At the same time, the White House has not yet explained how this mechanism will work and whether such an initiative was discussed with US allies.
According to Bloomberg, participants in the global shipping market were surprised by the American president's statement and noted that they had not received any warnings about the possible introduction of such a fee. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the country agrees with the principle of paying for the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, but considers the 20% rate excessive.
