This decision by the U.S. authorities, which has not yet been officially announced, was made against the backdrop of recent public threats by President Donald Trump to boycott the summit over statements that the South African government is seizing land from white South Africans in accordance with a new law on expropriation passed in the country.
The G-20 summit is an annual international forum of the world's largest economies, designed to address the biggest global financial problems. The summit in Johannesburg is scheduled for November 2025 under the slogan "Solidarity, equality, sustainable development."
A White House official referred to comments made by Trump on Monday, in which the American leader accused South Africa of committing "genocide" against white citizens and said he would boycott G20 leaders' meetings in Johannesburg if "the situation is not resolved."
The National Council's decision suspends U.S. preparations for the G-20 summit, which included a huge amount of bureaucratic coordination and working meetings of administration officials throughout the year prior to the summit.
South Africa has rejected the Trump administration's accusations, saying there is no evidence of persecution or "white genocide" in the country.
