Meteosat-12, the first geostationary satellite of the third generation, has been put into operation. It will provide more accurate weather forecasts and will be able to track lightning in real time over the next 20 years.

The first of the third generation Meteosat geostationary satellites (MTG) , Meteosat-12, was put into operation. It is expected to provide a boost to more accurate and faster forecasting in the event of extreme weather conditions.

Details

Europe's first third-generation satellite for ultra-fast weather forecasting and atmospheric research is fully operational.

MTG-I1, renamed Meteosat-12, was created in cooperation between the European Space Agency and Eumetsat, the European organization for the management of meteorological satellites.

Starting December 4, Eumetsat will provide data from all instruments on board the satellite. As follows from the explanation, the MTG satellites will provide data continuity for weather forecasting from geostationary orbit for the next 20 years.

Meteosat is one of the most complex meteorological satellite systems ever created

- says Phil Evans, CEO of Eumetsat.

The new satellite significantly expands the meteorological imaging capabilities and provides completely new measurement capabilities for near real-time lightning imaging, which is completely new for European meteorological satellites.

For reference

Meteosat-12 is equipped with a data collection and relay service (DCS) and a Geostationary Earth Observation and Rescue (GEOSAR) transponder.

The DCS collects observations and environmental data from ground-based meteorological platforms in its field of view and then transmits them to the MTG ground segment. The GSSPS transponder receives signals from emergency beacons in its field of view and transmits them to rescue services.

In addition to significantly improving meteorological satellite imagery in Europe, Meteosat-12 will improve observational capabilities in Africa, where in-situ observations or other remote sensing methods are practically unavailable. The high-resolution scanner, together with lightning detection, will be a major improvement for African meteorological services in their operational weather forecasting.
