The European Commission confirmed that the right of veto for new EU members will be discussed

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced discussions within the EU regarding the veto power for new members of the bloc, pointing to "new safeguards that will ensure how to make sure that once we have new members, they will adhere to European rules, being a member in 5, 10, or 15 years," but noted that they will "discuss each country" "as soon as they reach the point of concluding the accession treaty," she said upon arriving at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, UNN reports.

Kos responded to a question on "how you can ensure that future members, such as Ukraine, will not use their veto power to block important foreign policy decisions," noting that "first we need to reach the situation where we conclude an accession treaty for Ukraine as well; currently, we are concluding it for Montenegro, so there is still some time to see how to do this."

"But what we know now is—and this is why I mention the accession treaty with Montenegro—it will be a new generation of accession treaties in the sense that we will have new safeguards that will do or ensure exactly what you mentioned: how to make sure that once we have new members, they will adhere to European rules, being a member in 5, 10, or 15 years," she noted.

"So we will discuss each country, every single country, as soon as we reach the point of concluding the accession treaty," Kos emphasized.
