Russia and China vetoed UN resolution on opening the Strait of Hormuz

The UN Security Council did not adopt Bahrain's resolution calling on countries to coordinate actions to open the Strait of Hormuz, UNN reports with reference to NYT.

Details

Russia and China, permanent members of the Security Council, vetoed the resolution. 11 people voted for the resolution, two against. Pakistan, which mediates between Iran and the United States, was one of two countries that abstained.

Addendum

American leader Donald Trump issued a harsh threat to Iran, stating that "an entire civilization will die tonight" as the set deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz approaches.

Recall

Earlier, Trump threatened to destroy Iranian power plants and other civilian infrastructure, stating that the country would face dire consequences if it did not open the Strait of Hormuz by 8:00 PM ET on Tuesday. Trump had previously set several deadlines that were subsequently changed.

The President and the White House dismissed concerns that striking such infrastructure could be a war crime.
