According to the Lebanese side, Aoun's plane landed at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington. There, he was met by Lebanon's ambassador to the US, Nada Muawad, and staff of the diplomatic mission.
On Sunday, the Lebanese president is to hold talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and on Tuesday, his meeting with Donald Trump at the White House is scheduled. Aoun will also hold a series of talks with US senators and representatives of the US administration.
Security and the situation in the region are on the agenda
As CNN notes, the visit takes place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, despite US-brokered ceasefire agreements.
Last month, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at facilitating a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon as part of a broader de-escalation plan.
In addition, during previous talks in Washington, Israel and Lebanon agreed on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from two areas in southern Lebanon before the start of the next round of negotiations.
