Parliament approves draft law on BES reboot as a basis

The Ukrainian parliament has voted in the first reading in favor of a bill to reboot the Bureau of Economic Security, which provides for mandatory re-certification of employees and gives international partners a decisive vote in the selection process.

At a meeting on April 11, the Verkhovna Rada voted in the first reading for draft law No. 10439 on the reboot of the Bureau of Economic Security (BES). This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak in Telegram, UNN reports.

According to Zhelezniak, the bill provides for mandatory re-certification of employees. Also, according to the document, international partners will have a decisive vote in the selection and re-certification of BES employees.

Zheleznyak expects the following changes to be made to the draft law before the second reading:

  • one, not two, candidates for the position of BES director;
  • detailed re-certification; 
  • detailed selection procedure

"All this is in the comments of business, the IMF and the G7," Zheleznyak added.

In February, the Verkhovna Rada failed to support in the first reading a draft law that sets requirements for members of the competition commission for the election of the director of the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine and the mandatory use of a polygraph before appointment to the position in the agency. After that, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the Verkhovna Rada to adopt the draft law as soon as possible.
