Majority of US citizens oppose ending birthright citizenship – poll

The majority of Americans believe that all children born in the country should automatically receive citizenship. This is evidenced by a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares for a decision regarding President Donald Trump's attempt to abolish this practice, UNN reports.

Details

The poll, conducted nationwide from April 15–20, showed that 64% of Americans oppose the abolition of birthright citizenship, while 32% support its abolition, as provided for by Trump's executive order from January 2025.

This executive order was challenged in the courts, and Supreme Court justices are expected to issue a ruling by the end of June in a case that will become a milestone for civil rights and a test for Donald Trump's hardline immigration policy.

Public opinion is sharply divided along party lines: almost all Democrats support maintaining birthright citizenship, while the majority of Republicans favor its abolition. At the same time, 67% of respondents support banning transgender athletes from participating in women's school and university sports.

Regarding elections, 65% of Americans believe that mail-in ballots should be counted if they are postmarked by election day, even if they arrive later. On the issue of electoral districts, the majority opposes taking race into account when forming them, although a significant portion supports the representation of communities with shared characteristics.

Overall, the court's decision is expected by the end of June and could be defining for U.S. policy, while attitudes toward the court increasingly depend on the political preferences of citizens.
