Iran's ambassador to the UN stated on Tuesday at a Security Council meeting that Iran "categorically rejects" a temporary ceasefire and that any agreement must guarantee, in his words, a permanent cessation of aggression with reliable and verifiable guarantees to prevent its recurrence.

Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani made this statement after Russia and China vetoed a Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, which he welcomed.

US leader Donald Trump issued a harsh threat to Iran, stating that "an entire civilization will perish tonight" as the deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz approaches.

Earlier, Trump threatened to destroy Iranian power plants and other civilian infrastructure, stating that the country would face dire consequences if it did not open the Strait of Hormuz by 8:00 PM ET on Tuesday. Trump had previously set several deadlines that were subsequently changed.
