Income of energy sector leaders increased by 8%: who earned the most

According to the Opendatabot Index, the total revenue of the ten largest companies in the energy sector of Ukraine almost reached UAH 750 billion. Half of the companies in the ranking are state-owned, four belong to Rinat Akhmetov's SCM Group, and one, Kyiv Oblast Energy, is owned by Nelia Kostenko. For the second year in a row, the leader of the ranking is D.Trading from SCM Group. Eight of these ten companies specialize in electricity generation and trading, while the other two are engaged in gas trading.
For two years in a row, SCM Group's D.Trading has been the group leader. Last year, its revenue grew by 15% compared to 2022, reaching UAH 165.65 billion, and net profit increased by 30%. Two other companies of Rinat Akhmetov also showed significant revenue growth: Kyiv Energy Services increased its revenue by 1.5 times and Dnipro Energy Services by a third. At the same time, Dnipro Energy Services has the highest profit growth among all the companies in this year's energy index - 2.5 times.
Unlike other companies of SCM Group, DTEK Zakhidenergo reduced its revenue by 16% last year, posting a loss of UAH 164 million. The total revenue of the four companies owned by Rinat Akhmetov amounted to UAH 262.48 billion in 2023, which is 35% of the total revenue of the top ten companies according to the Opendatabot Index. The top energy companies also include five state-owned enterprises, of which only Ukrhydroenergo and NNEGC Energoatom managed to increase their revenues by 30% and 15%, respectively.In 2023, Ukrhydroenergo showed the highest net profit among the ten companies in the Opendatabot Index, earning UAH 17.3 billion, an increase of almost 50% compared to the first year of full-scale invasion.
State-owned Ukrenergo's revenue remained stable at over UAH 82 billion. At the same time, the other two state-owned companies, Naftogaz of Ukraine and Naftogaz Trading, which are engaged in gas trading, decreased their revenues by 4% and 9%, respectively, suffering total losses of UAH 10.29 billion. Kyiv Oblast Energy Company, owned by Nelia Kostenko, increased its revenue by 29%, although its profit was down 25% year-on-year.
