Germany and India plan to sign an $8 billion submarine deal within three months

Germany and India may finalize a large-scale defense agreement for the supply of submarines worth approximately $8 billion within the next three months. This was reported by Bloomberg, writes UNN.

Details

This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius after talks with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh in Kiel.

According to him, the project involves the construction of six submarines directly in India. Currently, the Indian government is coordinating further steps to finalize the agreement.

I am very confident that we will be able to sign the agreement in the near future

- Pistorius said after the meeting.

Project details

The project plans to involve the German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and the Indian state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, which will jointly work on the production of submarines.

Pistorius also noted that, according to the Indian side, the agreement "is on track" and should be completed soon.

India's largest defense contract

The contract is expected to be worth at least $8 billion, which could make it the largest defense deal in India's history. The issue of this cooperation was previously discussed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the German leader's visit to India.

If the agreement is implemented, it will be the first time that German submarine production technologies are transferred to a country outside Europe.
