An explosion at the MOL petrochemical plant in Hungary caused a fire; no exceedances of maximum permissible concentrations of hazardous substances have been recorded so far, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar reported on social media on Friday, UNN writes.

At the MOL plant in Tiszaújváros, an explosion occurred this morning at the hazardous Olefin-1 unit during a restart following maintenance. According to preliminary data, one person was killed and seven others suffered serious burns,

Currently, according to him, firefighting efforts are underway.

"The damaged pipeline is burning like a torch. A mobile disaster prevention laboratory has arrived at the scene and is conducting measurements, but so far it has not recorded any exceedances of the maximum permissible concentrations of hazardous substances," the Hungarian Prime Minister stated.

MOL informed 444.hu: "An explosion occurred during the restart of the Olefin 1 unit at the Mol Petrolkemia plant in Tiszaújváros. The fire was localized by firefighters, and efforts to extinguish it are currently ongoing. As a result of the incident, several people sustained serious injuries and there is one fatality. Experts are investigating the circumstances of the accident."

Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy and MOL CEO Zsolt Hernádi, who will soon arrive at the scene, will provide additional information, according to Magyar.
