EU Diplomacy Chief Josep Borrell called Russia's nuclear threats “absolutely irresponsible”, reacting to the update of Russia's nuclear doctrine, which coincided with the 1000th day of Russia's war against Ukraine.
This is not the first time Moscow has threatened nuclear escalation, which is "absolutely irresponsible," said outgoing EU diplomat Josep Borrell, commenting on the update of Russia's nuclear doctrine, following a meeting of EU defense ministers on Tuesday, UNN reports.

"The fact that their announcement of this update of their nuclear doctrine coincides with the 1000th day of Russia's war against Ukraine has something symbolic. This is not the first time they have threatened nuclear escalation, which is completely irresponsible," Borrell said.
"This is not the first time Putin has played the nuclear gamble. (...) But the call for nuclear, talk of nuclear deterrence at this moment is something we strongly reject, we condemn any reference to the use of nuclear weapons..." - said the head of EU diplomacy.
