Political prisoner Ivan Yatskin, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Russian Federation, was placed in a punishment cell for trumped-up violations. He is subjected to inhuman treatment in the detention center and is kept in terrible conditions.

Crimean citizen Ivan Yatskin, convicted by Russia on trumped-up charges of "high treason," was held for 50 days in the penal isolation ward of the colony in Kemerovo. The grounds for isolation were far-fetched violations, such as unbuttoned button, staying on the bed before the allowed time and refusing to greet during the evening check. This was reported to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center by his relatives, UNN reports.

Inhumane conditions

According to his family, Yatskin faces constant violations of his rights. The reasons for punishment are absurd. First, the Crimean was isolated because of an allegedly unbuttoned button, and then for refusing to say hello. During his stay in the detention center, his personal belongings, handed over by his family, were left unattended in the barracks. As a result, they were stolen by other prisoners.

"The food in the colony remains of extremely poor quality. Sometimes they give us 'moose food' (some kind of dry potatoes) and dert (oatmeal, ground up like for animals). Sometimes they give us something to eat," the relatives said.

Torture because of pro-Ukrainian position

Ivan became a victim of the Russian repressive system in 2019, when he was detained on suspicion of passing information to the Ukrainian special services. He is accused of high treason under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, in the form of espionage. After the arrest, Yatskin was transported from the occupied Crimea to Moscow, where Russian security forces exerted strong psychological pressure on him. The Security Service of Ukraine denied any cooperation with Yatskin. The occupiers sentenced him to 11 years in a strict regime colony.

The imprisonment worsened Yatskin's health, and on November 4, 2021, he was placed in the punishment isolation ward of the colony in Krasnodar Territory. For three days, the political prisoner was forced to stand on his feet, as, according to the rules of stay in the punishment isolation ward, his bed was strapped down during the day, and he could not rest.

russia ignores international norms

Russia's actions against the Crimean citizen violate a number of international legal norms, in particular:

- The Geneva Convention. The prohibition of ill-treatment of civilians in the occupied territories and the obligation to ensure decent treatment of prisoners.

- The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. russia, as a state party, is obliged to guarantee the right to a fair trial and protection from torture.

- The European Convention on Human Rights. the Russian Federation is responsible for the detention of people in inhumane conditions, which is tantamount to torture.

The international community has repeatedly called on Russia to stop persecuting Ukrainian citizens and release all political prisoners. However, these demands are ignored. russia uses political prisoners as an instrument of pressure on Ukraine.
