The Council of the European Union has decided to abolish control at the land borders with Bulgaria and Romania. They will join the Schengen area on January 1, 2025, the EU Council reported, UNN reported.

This is a historic moment when Bulgaria and Romania will finally become full members of the Schengen area. The abolition of checks on persons at internal land borders with and between these member states was a top priority of the Hungarian Presidency. Today we have made it a reality.

According to him, "this step will benefit not only the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania, but also the EU as a whole.

Both countries have been part of the Schengen area by air and sea since March this year, after reaching a partial agreement with Austria. However, the issue of land borders remained unresolved until 2024. According to the Romanian Union of Road Hauliers, long queues form at the land borders with Hungary and Bulgaria, causing significant delays for drivers.
