In recent weeks, Biden has increasingly used humor to criticize his predecessor and potential rival in the 2024 election and to push back against concerns about his age.

"The 2024 election is in full swing, and yes, age is an issue. I am a grown man running against a six-year-old child," Biden said, also calling Trump "Sleepy Don.

"Age is the only thing we have in common, my vice president actually supports me," Biden said, referring to former Vice President Mike Pence, who did not support Trump in 2024.

At the dinner, Biden also mocked Trump's problems with the law. The former US president is currently required to appear in court four times a week in a criminal trial in New York.

"Donald has had a few rough days lately. You could call it stormy weather," Biden said.

Biden also used the annual dinner to emphasize the role of a free press.

"Some people call you an enemy of the people. This is wrong and dangerous. You literally risk your life doing your job," Biden told a room full of journalists and government officials.

"Journalism is definitely not a crime, neither here, nor there, nor anywhere else in the world," he said.

Meanwhile, protesters gathered outside the building where the event was being held with administration officials, journalists and celebrities who had arrived for the annual dinner, criticizing Biden's actions in the war between Israel and Hamas and the media coverage of it.

"Shame on you!" - protesters shouted at the audience, AP reports.

"Western media, we see you and all the horrors you are hiding," the crowd chanted.
