U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to answer whether the United States is prepared to impose sanctions on Chinese banks — a move that could jeopardize the already difficult relationship between China and the Trump administration, UNN reports, citing CNN.

On Monday, Bessent threatened to impose sanctions on countries that refuse to sever economic ties with Iran. But when asked whether this would include Tehran’s main trading partner, China, he only replied that "no one is beyond the reach of U.S. sanctions."

"If they facilitate transactions and are part of the ecosystem that turns Iranian oil into money, into repression, they will be targeted," Bessent said.

China has long purchased up to 90% of Iran’s oil exports, in addition to supporting broader trade relations.
