Operational units of the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation (BLKA) and the police of the Free State of Thuringia took part in the detention under the direction of the Munich Public Prosecutor General’s Office — the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET) — in Thuringia.
The 33-year-old Ukrainian national is currently in custody at a Bavarian correctional facility on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Munich District Court. He is charged with espionage for the purpose of sabotage, which falls under Section 87 of the German Criminal Code.
The current suspicion is that the detainee, acting as a so-called "low-level agent" on behalf of the intelligence service of a foreign state, photographed the premises of a Bavarian defense enterprise in June 2026 in preparation for acts of sabotage and provided the images to his handler. At the request of the Munich Public Prosecutor General’s Office, an investigating judge of the Munich Local Court issued an arrest warrant for the suspect on August 3, 2026, which was served on him and executed that same day
