The Trump administration plans to discuss the return of at least six US citizens from Iranian captivity. Tehran may use the detainees as leverage.

During US-Iranian talks in Islamabad, the Donald Trump administration intends to demand the release of Americans held in Iran. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the plans, writes UNN.

According to the publication's interlocutors, it is currently unknown how much the US will pressure Iran to release the detained citizens. At the same time, some of them express concern that in the event of difficult negotiations, this issue may be postponed.

According to The Washington Post, at least six US citizens are in custody in Iran. Tehran likely views them as a tool of influence during negotiations with Washington.

Advocates for the detainees hope that these citizens may be released as a gesture of goodwill from the Iranian side.

In their opinion, such hopes appeared after Iran's recent decision to allow two French citizens, convicted on espionage charges, to leave the country. The French side stated that these charges were baseless and politically motivated. Both French citizens left Iran on April 7 after Oman's mediation and as a result of the release of an Iranian woman from house arrest in France.

The White House declined to comment, stating that these are "ongoing discussions, and the US will not negotiate through the press," spokeswoman Anna Kelly said via email.
