As noted, in 2024, NATO decided to create a new international military unit—Forward Land Forces Finland (FLF), designed to function as a rapid response unit.

This military unit, which began its operations on Saturday, June 6, also includes a Swedish combat group.
It is reported that NATO has similar land units in Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia.
Sweden and Finland are located along the waterway used by Russian warships to transit between Saint Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
Finland shares a border with the Russian Federation and fought against the USSR twice during World War II.
