Disappointment with Biden and hope for Trump: whom do Ukrainians trust more

The level of trust among Ukrainians in the new US President Donald Trump is quite high. More than 40% of respondents expressed their trust in him, while last year it was only 10.1%. UNN reports this with reference to the survey "Foreign Policy and Security. Moods of Ukrainian society" conducted by Info Sapiens on the request of the New Europe Center.

"The leaders of public trust among Ukrainians were the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the president of Poland Andrzej Duda – they have virtually the same indicators (65%). Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in third place (almost 60%). French President Emmanuel Macron is not far behind him (58.4%). The fifth position belongs to the president of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu (57.3%)," the survey results say.

Attention is drawn to the rather high level of confidence among Ukrainians in the new US President Donald Trump – especially against the background of the fall in the corresponding indicator of Joseph Biden and given similar confidence ratings in European countries.

"For example, in France, Trump was trusted by 16%, in Britain by 30%, only Hungary looks the most attractive with confidence of 37%, which is still less than the level of trust among Ukrainians – 44.6%. Probably, behind such a high level of support is the expectation from the new US administration of a clearer and more decisive policy towards Ukraine. It cannot be ruled out that some respondents associate certain hopes with the restoration of peace in Ukraine, which Trump emphasized during the election campaign," the report says.

It is noted that obviously, Trump's high confidence could also be affected by disappointment in the current US president, for whom a significant drop in the indicator was recorded.

"Last year, by the way, we asked Ukrainians:" who do you like more – Donald Trump or Joseph Biden?". The undisputed leader of sympathies then turned out to be the current president with an indicator of 78.1%. Only 10.1% of respondents preferred the leader of the Republican Party," the report says.

Yes, Biden and Scholz are losing confidence. There was a noticeable drop in the level of public confidence in foreign leaders in general. If last year the record holder for trust was US President Joseph Biden with an indicator of almost 82%, now the leaders "competed" for a level of trust of 65%.

"The only Western leader with positive dynamics, that is, an increase in the level of trust, not a fall, was French President Emmanuel Macron: last year 54.5% trusted him, and this year – 58.4%. Although the growth was only 4 percentage points, however, against the background of other leaders, this is not so bad. It seems that the Ukrainians did not ignore Macron's efforts to change the West's strategy to support Ukraine – for example, a clear position on inviting Ukraine to NATO, the French leader's initiative to send military components to Ukraine, etc.," the survey notes.
