For years, the local administration planned and failed to develop the wetland area. A clever pack of rodents figured out how to get things done and save significant public funds.

While biodiversity advocates are concerned about the fate of beavers in various European countries, in the Czech Republic, rodents are not wasting any time. In the protected landscape area of Brdy, a story unfolded that could become a model example of ecological engineering.

Eight European beavers, members of one family, settled in the protected area of Brdy, through which the Klabava River flows, more than 20 kilometers from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. A year after their appearance, the beavers began to build dams - alder was cleared, the area was greened. The beavers created a complex network of dams. The result was further natural wetland formation in the floodplain.

The Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic admits that the animals really helped. The beavers developed an area that the state had wanted to turn into wetlands for years. But the project was constantly delayed due to land negotiations.

Not everywhere in the Czech Republic do beavers receive praise

While beavers are praised in Brdy, in other parts of the Czech Republic, authorities would prefer to see them several kilometers away.

For example, in the city of Přerov (a city located in the historical region of Moravia, in the Přerov district, Olomouc Region), beavers settled near residential areas and began to destroy trees - their construction ambitions caused concern. The city had to intervene, remove some trees, install protective fences, and ensure that their activities did not cause damage. The costs of these measures amounted to tens of thousands of crowns.

Similar problems are observed in the Morava River basin, where beavers cause the most damage to water management enterprises, destroying protective dams, building barriers that cause water to swell and flood surrounding lands.

– explains Václav Hargulák, CEO of the Morava River Basin in the Czech Republic.
