What pathologies are increasingly encountered by pregnant women and how to prevent them

The number of pregnant women who have not just one disease but a combination of conditions is growing. More and more women have chronic diseases that appeared before pregnancy. This was stated in a comment to UNN by obstetrician-gynecologist Vladyslav Yavir.

"We are now more often encountering not just one disease, but a combination of diseases, a mix of pathologies such as, for example, anemia, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and chronic hypertension, arterial hypertension. And now, in my opinion, more and more pregnant women come with some chronic pathologies that appeared before pregnancy,"

- says the doctor.

Vladyslav Yavir noted that, unfortunately, many women are insufficiently examined. This is often due to the fact that they were in frontline territories until recently, or left their previous place of residence and did not register.

"There have been more cases where women are brought in at terminal stages – when help is needed here and now. Our facility – the Kyiv Perinatal Center – specializes in pathologies, so, of course, we objectively have a higher percentage of pregnancies with complications and severe courses. But, in my opinion, such pregnancies have become more numerous," says Yavir.

According to the doctor, women from all over Ukraine turn to the Perinatal Center, as the doctors here have the highest level of experience in managing pregnancy and childbirth with complications. However, as the doctor emphasizes, many complications could have been avoided, and exacerbations of chronic diseases could have been prevented in the case of timely examination during pregnancy planning.

At the capital's Perinatal Center, a unique organ-preserving operation is performed for one of the most complex obstetric pathologies - placenta accreta.

"One of the leading centers in Kyiv performing complex organ-preserving operations is the Kyiv Perinatal Center under the leadership of Professor Dmytro Govsieiev. Every year, the perinatal center performs more than 20 organ-preserving operations on patients with placenta accreta. In particular, in 2026, doctors of the Kyiv Perinatal Center managed to preserve the uterus even for a patient after several cesarean sections with placenta previa and accreta placenta.

In general, pregnant women from the city of Kyiv with complicated pregnancies, premature births up to 34 weeks of gestation are referred to the Kyiv Perinatal Center, and our colleagues demonstrate good obstetric and perinatal results," - obstetrician-gynecologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Faculty Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Bogomolets National University Vasyl Beniuk told UNN.
