NASC joined the four-year SnowPI project to study the cryosphere of the Polar Regions. Research will be conducted at the Academician Vernadsky station.

Ukrainian scientists joined a new EU project on polar snow and permafrost

The National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) has joined a new EU project, "Polar Snow, Permafrost and Continental Ice in a Changing World" (SnowPI); the project, funded by the EU Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA), is designed for 4 years. This was reported by the press service of the center, writes UNN.

Within its framework, scientists plan to collect new data on the cryosphere of both polar regions: both the Arctic and the Antarctic. The main goal is to predict the rate of changes already observed in the polar regions due to global warming and to develop adaptation strategies.

It is reported that the project is designed for 4 years and includes 14 participants – leading European institutions for climate research and modeling, including NASC. The coordinator is the Norwegian Research Institute (NORCE). Funding is provided by the EU Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA).

NASC in the project ensures measurements at the research site in the Southern Hemisphere – at our Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky". Currently, this is one of the hottest spots in Antarctica, where warming is felt most strongly.

Ukrainian scientists will study the typical properties and characteristics of the snow cover in the marine Antarctic zone, as it is expected that snow and glaciers here will undergo the greatest transformations in the near future.

There will also be an opportunity to participate in the processing of modern modeling data and conduct interesting experiments with the latest equipment.

- said Denys Pishniak, head of the Department of Atmospheric Physics and Geocosmos at NASC and one of the project's executors.
