Schools that were closed last week reopened on the first day of the week in Bangladesh, despite the fact that the latest 72-hour heat warning was extended until April 30.
Due to the recent Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr holidays, students received extended vacations, including due to the intense heat, which made schools worried about preparing students for end-of-year exams.
"Our academic activities are hampered by this long break, including the Ramadan and Eid holidays. This is the time of academic studies for the end-of-year exams," Bornali Hossein, the principal of Meherounnes Girls' School, told Reuters Television.
"We will do our best to catch up until the government issues the next directive," she said.
The Ministry of Education said that daily assemblies will not be held until further notice, and that some classroom activities that take place outside the classroom and are exposed to sunlight will be limited.
However, parents still worry about their children's health. "The weather is unbearable. What happens if my daughter gets sick?" - asked Suman Ahmed, a mother of a six-year-old child.
Scientists say that climate change is contributing to more frequent, stronger, and longer heat waves in the summer months.
Authorities are urging residents to stay home and drink water.
