Russia has for the first time showcased the "Geran-5" cruise missile, which has already been used to attack Ukraine

Russia has publicly demonstrated the new "Geran-5" cruise missile for the first time, which occupying forces have already used for strikes against Ukraine. This was reported by Defense Express, according to UNN.

Details

The missile was shown during the so-called "virtual parade" for May 9th. The released footage also shows the launcher for this weapon.

According to Defense Express, the video was likely filmed at a launch site in Russia's Orel region. Previously, the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine had published photos of "Geran-5" wreckage, which visually match the missile demonstrated by the Russians.

The missile has a range of up to 1,000 kilometers

As Defense Express notes, the "Geran-5" belongs to the class of so-called "low-cost cruise missiles." Its range is estimated at approximately 1,000 kilometers.

The missile is equipped with a jet engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 600 km/h. At the same time, the warhead of the "Geran-5" is significantly smaller than that of the Ukrainian FP-5 "Flamingo" – about 90 kg compared to nearly a ton of explosives in the FP-5.

Defense Express notes that when creating the missile, the Russians likely used Iranian Karrar designs. The construction also utilizes Chinese components and Western-made parts, specifically from the USA and Germany.

The Russian Federation intends to use the "Geran-5" to saturate air defenses

A separate threat is posed by the possibility of mass-producing such missiles.

According to Defense Express's assessment, the "Geran-5" could be used to saturate air defense systems due to its relatively low cost and jet speed.

Furthermore, the Russians plan to equip these missiles with air-to-air missiles. Specifically, this refers to the R-73 and R-60.
