Context

Last week, the university attempted to forcefully shut down demonstrations on campus when Columbia President Minoush Shafiq invited the NYPD to enter the campus, drawing the ire of many human rights groups, students and faculty. More than 100 people were arrested , reminiscent of the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations at Columbia University more than 50 years ago, Reuters reports.

At the same time, demonstrations on the Columbia University campus continue. The protest movement has spread to other American universities. Demonstrators are calling for an end to the war in Gaza, L'Opinion reports.
