After massive missile strikes by the russian federation, Ukrainian NPPs reduced electricity production due to damage to substations. The IAEA teams at the plants recorded explosions and power line outages.

Ukraine's operating nuclear power plants have reduced electricity production after russian missile strikes. Only two of the nine operating reactors are operating at full capacity due to damage to several substations on which Ukrainian NPPs depend for external power supply. This is stated in the IAEA report, UNN reports.

Details

According to the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Ukraine's operating nuclear power plants have reduced electricity production this morning.

This is a precautionary measure following widespread military action across the country that has reportedly targeted its energy infrastructure, further deteriorating the nuclear security situation

- Grossi said.

It is noted that Khmelnytsky, Rivne and South Ukrainian NPPs were not directly affected and were not shut down. However, several electrical substations on which they depend suffered additional damage during the strikes.

The main power lines from four substations were disconnected. At the moment, only two of the country's nine operating reactors are generating electricity at 100% capacity

- Grossi added.

The IAEA teams based at the NPPs heard air defense activities. At Khmelnytsky NPP, the IAEA team heard a large explosion. At Rivne NPP, two 330 kilovolt (kW) power lines were down.

The country's energy infrastructure is extremely vulnerable, which directly affects nuclear safety

- Grossi added.

Recall

russia fired about 120 missiles and 90 drones of various types at Ukraine. Air defense destroyed more than 140 targets, but there was damage to energy infrastructure and casualties.
