National Police introduced a new mechanism for identifying missing persons

Police will read fingerprints from ID card chips to identify missing persons. The data will be compared with the fingerprints of unidentified bodies.
Police investigators will now have access to graphic images of fingerprints from electronic media embedded in the biometric ID documents of Ukrainian citizens. This refers to the graphic images of fingerprints provided by an individual during the application process for the relevant document. This was reported by the communications department based on materials from the Main Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine, according to UNN.

Police authorities in all regions of Ukraine are now equipped with special software and hardware systems that allow for the reading of information from electronic chips embedded in documents.
The implementation of new technical capabilities allows for the creation of a database of lifetime fingerprint data for persons missing under special circumstances. Subsequently, the data is placed in the relevant records of the National Police of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and is automatically checked for possible matches with fingerprints recovered during work with unidentified bodies,
Passports of a citizen of Ukraine in the form of a booklet, as well as old-style foreign passports issued before the introduction of biometric documents, do not contain an electronic chip; therefore, it is impossible to use them to obtain fingerprints.
In connection with the implementation of new technical capabilities, investigators may contact the relatives of persons missing under special circumstances with a request to provide the ID documents of the missing person for inspection and to obtain graphic images of fingerprints.
Relatives may independently contact the investigator handling the relevant criminal proceedings with a petition to conduct an inspection of such documents. After the inspection and the reading of the necessary information, the ID document is immediately returned to the family.
