On the 16th anniversary of Russia's aggression against Georgia, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemned the occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Ukraine calls on Russia to withdraw its troops and revoke the recognition of these regions as "independent states.

Russian occupants have turned the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia into a gray zone where lawlessness reigns and human rights are ignored. Russia must withdraw its troops from the territory of Georgia and cancel the recognition of Georgian regions as so-called "independent states." This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the 16th anniversary of the beginning of Russia's armed aggression against Georgia, UNN reports.

Details

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded that August 7 marks 16 years since the beginning of Russia's armed aggression against Georgia, as a result of which Russia killed hundreds of innocent people and occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.

The Russian occupation has turned these Georgian regions into a gray zone where lawlessness reigns, there are no prospects, and human rights are neglected

- the statement reads.

The fighting stopped in August 2008, but Russia's aggression against Georgia did not end there, the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry emphasized that Moscow continued the so-called "borderization," that is, the creeping annexation of Georgian territory, pressure, propaganda, and other hybrid methods of interference.

Ukraine supports Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and strongly condemns the Kremlin's aggressive policy. Russia must withdraw its troops from the sovereign territory of Georgia in accordance with the 2008 ceasefire agreement and revoke the recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as so-called "independent states"

-the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called.

The ministry is convinced that only joint efforts of the international community can help prevent Russia's aggressive policy, force it to leave the temporarily occupied territories of Georgia and Ukraine, and bring Russian criminals to justice for all the wrongs, crimes and atrocities.
